Facilities

As a student in the department, you will have access to a wide variety of facilities and technical tools related to their particular field such as:

Computer Labs A number of computer labs are available for student use. Geological/petrological, statistical, GIS (ARCInfo and other software), image processing and cartographic software packages are also available.
Rock Prep Lab A lab with rock saws and other equipment is available for specimen production.
Microscope Lab

Several rooms with research microscopes are available. Equipment includes:

  • Nikon Eclipse LV Pol 100 microscope for highest level of optical quality, operability and stability for polarizing microscopy
  • Leica Z16 APO macroscope: Manual 16:1 Macroscope for detailed documentation, measurement and evaluation
  • Digital Sight DS-2Mv camera (works on both the microscope and microscope)
  • Olympus BX51-P microscope with Petrog automatic counting stage
Hydrology Lab

A state-of-the-art stream simulation table is available for research purposes

Core Lab Facility

The core lab has an OFITE Spectral Gamma Ray Logger (SGR-74)

Handheld XRF/XRD

A handheld Brucker XRF and a portable TERRA XRD/XRF analyzer are available

Paleontology Lab

A small paleontology lab is available with storage and limited preparation facilities

Rock Strength Equipment
  • 2 Equotip portable hardness tester (Model: EQUOTIP BAMBINO 2) to estimate rock strength
  • Hand-held indentation devices to estimate rock strength
  • PLT-110 DIGITAL POINT LOAD TESTING SYSTEM. Digital Point Load TestingApparatus to measure the point load strength index
  • PLT-100-ULT ULTRASONIC VELOCITY MEASUREMENT SYSTEM: Ultrasonic Velocity test system for automatic measurements of P wave velocities through rock specimens
  • Morehouse Calibration 225,000 pound Load Cell installed on the GCTS 1000 kN (224809 pound) Unconfined Testing System

  • A SpectroBLUE TI Inductively Coupled Plasma- Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) with Teledyne ASX-560 autosampler
